This is a a thread that I have always wanted to do. It is just a thread about people in a band. Pretty much we start out as a newly formed band, and build from there. Things like recording, touring, ect. It is really completely open ended.

I would like to do this about a metal band(preferably melodic or symphonic), of any subgenre except Nu, core, or Goregrind. Or Glam Rock *shudder*.

For right now, I just want a little bit of OOC discussion, like who will play what, and if there are 4 or more people who want to do this, then I would really like to get this started.

Well I've never been in a band in real life but it would be interesting to roleplaying being in one. I'll take the second guitarist.

By the way, do you have some knowledge of the guitar, or should I fill you in on some of the lingo?

I've been on a real folk/viking metal kick lately, but my roots are all in Melodic Death. Stuff like Mors Principium Est, or Dark Lunacy.

I'm fine with medal but I don't know much about guitar so you may want to fill me in.

It's a big chunk of wood, with six or seven strings, if you want to go even lower, and 21 to 24 frets(separated by metal bars on the neck). Every 2 frets there is a marker, usually a dot. On the 12th and 24th fret there are 2 dots(if you look on my guitar in the post yo piktcha thread, it is an eye at the 12th), because that is where a new octave starts on each string(the 15th fret is the same note as the 3rd fret, but one octave higher for each string, and so on). Tunings for these strings vary, but for metal tuning to a low note is very common

E, A, D, G, B, E
I play in C standard personally (C, F, A#, D#, G, C)

The best guitars for metal are Schecter Diamond Series(Omen, Damien, Hellraiser), Ibanez RG's, all Jackson, ESP LTD's, Gibson Les Pauls; Xplorers; Flying Vs(but they are several thousand dollars) and maybe Dean.

The string vibration is registered with the pickups(those two big black rectangles on the body that you can see in the Post yo Piktcha thread), and travels down a wire to either an amp or a pedal box. For Metal, it is best to use pedals for the distortion(what makes the guitars sound all heavy and fuzzy and what not). Personally, I use a 28 year old Boss HM-2. The thing is bad ass(but hard to find and very hard to make sound really good), but there are Metal distortion pedals from almost every company. The most common is the Boss Metal Zone MT-2.

A chord connects the pedal to an amplifier, basically a big ass speaker with some knobs for the controls.

How to play the guitar is simple(though learning it in RL is among the hardest things you will ever do ). You pluck a string with a pick that you hold between your thumb and index finger on your right hand, and press down that string with the fingers on your left hand.

The techniques employed in metal are: Tremolo picking(just picking one string really fast and moving your fingers on it), Palm Muting (You put your right wrist on the end of the string next to the bridge, and just keep picking the string. it sounds kind of heavier and the note doesn't last as long), Sweep Picking (like a really slow strum of the strings, and you fret each string as you hit it) Strumming (you hit all of the strings at once), Legato (where you don't pick a string, just do hammer ons and pull offs) Tapping (mainly solos, you use your right hand middle finger to hammer on and pull off really quickly).

That's pretty much all that you could ever want to know about guitars. If you need more help or info, I'm always happy to help.

I don't think it's that no one else likes music, but no one else likes the idea of even pretending of being in a band.

Wanting to listen to music and play an instrument are two different things.

Three Guitarist?

Yeah it kinda is.

No, we have 2 guitarists(me and Duvy), Drums(Nate), And Bass/Vocals(Helix).

And besides, alot of metal bands have 3 guitars. It makes it to where 2 can be harmonizing and 1 can be playing rhythm. But anyway, now we have the whole roster filled out, it is time to start this. I'll put up the first post a little later on today.

1st post time!


It was Vincent's daily ritual for the past two weeks. Get home from school, pop open a Big Red, play The Elder Scrolls 4 for an hour, and then get on the internet in the two hours remaining before his father gets home. In that time he would blast Mors Principium Est, Eluveitie, and Dark Lunacy while browsing the Musicians category of Craigslist. There he had an ad himself. This contained a link to a Youtube channel where there were several videos of him performing both songs that he had written himself, and a few of other bands.

He himself was seeking a band. In this, the waning weeks of May, he had already planned to use his entire summer seeking fellow musicians, and hopefully getting at least something started. There were a few such people that he had met in school, but only briefly discussed any possibility of forming a group. However, if there was still space to be filled after internet options were exhausted, they would work.

Vincent was in the middle of reading another ad for a previously formed band claiming to seek a guitarist, when the device in his front jeans pocket began to vibrate. He pulled the phone out and looked at it's large screen. It was an unrecognised number. Vincent scrambled to end the music. When the guitars ceased their blaring and the drums quit blasting, he touched the button to accept the call.
"Hello?" He answered.

Gwazi replied in the phone "Hey it's Gwazi. You said something about calling you for some band?".

Nate was walking home from school. Another boring day of hell.

As Nate reached his house he found his mother was at work. Nothing else to do but use the computer. Nate searched a few sites looking for nothing really. He stumbled onto an ad.

A band?
Nate said. His hardly used drum set in the back of his room.

Nate picked up his phone and dialed the number.
